Jean Piaget Biography and Theory of Cognitive Development

Piagets Theory of Cognitive Development: Jean Piagets theory of cognitive development is a description of the four distinct stages of development of cognition in children. The theory was developed at a time when Piaget was employed at the Binet Institute in the 1920s in which his main responsibilities were to develop the French versions of questions on the English intelligence tests. During this period, Piaget became increasingly concerned or interested with the reasons children gave for their incorrect answers to questions that needed logical thinking. In the process, he believed that the incorrect answers were a reflection of the significant differences in the thinking processes between adults and children. As a result, Piaget became the first psychologist to make a systematic examination of cognitive development since there was a common assumption in the field of psychology that children are simply less competent thinkers than adults. Through his work, Piaget has had significant contributions to the field of psychology to an extent that his theory on cognitive development continues to have considerable impact on learning and development in the contemporary world. Brief Biography of Jean Piaget: Jean Piaget was born in 1896 in Neuchatel, Switzerland just before the turn of the century and died at the age of 85 in 1980 in Geneva.
